How to...
Boozy coffee can tick two boxes at once and give you the caffeine and alcohol fix you’re looking for. While coffee cocktails are often a popular choice, you might just want a simple fix to jazz up your cup of joe. That’s where alcoholic coffee comes in.
Alcoholic coffee is simply a typical cup of black, hot or iced, coffee with sugar, whipped cream and a shot or two of your favourite liqueur. It’s really easy to make and, teamed with the right coffee beans, can elevate your brew to the next level. To help you out, we’ve got a few simple boozy coffee recipes to get you started.
We’ll cover:
We’d recommend using freshly roasted high-quality coffee beans to get the best flavours from your alcoholic coffee. As an independent coffee roaster, we have a wide range of high-quality coffee available as beans or ground to suit your coffee machine. Each coffee has its own flavour profile so you may want to pair boozy notes with your boozy coffee to get a full burst of flavour.
For each of these recipes, you’ll need to start by brewing your coffee. So, whether you prefer filter, espresso, moka pot or cafetiere coffee, make a fresh cup of hot black coffee first, before adding your alcohol of choice.
You’ll need:
150ml freshly brewed coffee
50ml Baileys Original Irish Cream
Whipped cream (to taste)
Chocolate sprinkles (to taste)
Take a 50ml shot of Baileys and pour it straight into your fresh cup of coffee. Give it a good stir before adding a generous helping of whipped cream on top and dusting it with hot chocolate powder and sprinkles, to taste. The great thing about this is you can also switch out the Baileys, whipped cream and chocolate for dairy-free versions – perfect for vegans or those with allergies.
You’ll need:
125ml freshly brewed coffee
30ml Tia Maria
50ml single cream
Whipped cream (to taste)
This dark coffee liqueur pairs perfectly with a hot cup of coffee. Simply add the Tia Maria to your cup of freshly brewed coffee and mix it in. Drizzle the single cream in, over the back of a spoon, and sit the whipped cream on top. Dust with chocolate powder or shavings.
You’ll need:
235ml freshly brewed coffee
30ml Amaretto
Whipped cream (to taste)
An Italian twist to an Irish coffee, amaretto liqueur is a welcome addition to your brew. Simply stir the amaretto liqueur into your hot cup of coffee, top it with whipped cream and add a light dusting of chocolate powder or sprinkles.
You’ll need:
170ml freshly brewed coffee
40ml Irish whiskey
1tsp brown sugar
1tsp granulated sugar
Whipped cream (to taste)
Probably the most popular of boozy coffee drinks, Irish coffee is always a treat. Pour your freshly brewed coffee into a heatproof glass or mug and add in the sugar and whiskey then stir until the sugar has all dissolved. Add the whipped cream but do not stir it into your hot coffee so it sits on top of the drink. For an authentic brew, you should use traditional Irish whiskey.
Strictly speaking, you can add as much, or as little, alcohol to your coffee as you like so it is balanced to suit your personal taste. Alcoholic coffee makes a great dessert drink but it can also be a great treat to your morning coffee on holiday or an afternoon treat at the weekend. It’s super easy to make and tastes delicious when paired with the best coffee beans. Take a look at our range of quality coffee beans and find the best flavours to complement your boozy beverage.
